John Duval's contribution to the evolution of Grange has been critical. His stewardship has probably seen the greatest developments and innovation in viticulture and winemaking. John Duval represented a new generation of winemakers with a very strong, pure science and applied winemaking background. For three years he played an understudy role to John Davoren (creator of St. Henri), Don Ditter and Max Schubert. Assuming the mantle of Chief Winemaker at a young age, he was fully immersed in the Penfolds winemaking traditions. Matured in new American oak hogsheads for eighteen months.
