Valley Clare is internationally renowned for Riesling, many of the region's finest vineyards are at Watervale. This distinguished hamlet has a population of only two hundred and fifty, a single shop and one garage, a pub and a school, a library, two churches and five distinguished wineries. Like many of the world's great wine growing appellations, Watervale has a name and global reach that belies its tiny size. Crabtree is an exquisitely balanced Riesling with an intensity of complex varietal characters, fine mineral acidity and lovely persistence of fruit.
There is a conjunction of unique and distinctive soils at Watervale, loam on limestone or loam on shale, all well-draining and enhanced by a favourable climate, warmth, sunshine and cool nights. The Crabtree team have a long history and experience with Riesling, growing it in the vineyard and handling it in the winery. A key strategy to formulating this wine is to pick and ferment all the Riesling blocks separately. Thirteen individual ferments provide the team with intimate insights into each block's flavour profile and unique terroir characteristics. The best free run juices are identified and cold fermented to dry. The finest of these batches are set aside for inclusion into the final wine.
TASTING NOTES
Pale straw with green hues. Expressing all the requisite Watervale florals on the bouquet, lemon, fresh pineapples and pear. A punchy, layered grapefruit and citrus spice palate coats the mouth, finishing long, crisp and dry. A splendid rendering of luscious Watervale Riesling.

More About Crabtree Wines
Robert Crabtree studied law at Oxford University and was a practising lawyer/ academic at Cambridge, he always had an interest in viticulture and made fruit wines as a hobby
Crabtree's curiosity in winemaking led him to complete two vintages at Bergerac and another in New Zealand, before landing in Australia and deciding that he would become a full time winemaker. After careful selection of possible wine regions, Robert decided that the Clare Valley was to be the region of choice. Whilst studying winemaking at Roseworthy, Robert purchased a small existing property at Watervale in 1980 and named it Watervale Cellars. In 1983 Robert purchased the old Flax Mill building in Auburn. He equipped it as a small (somewhat rough and ready) winery and planted two acres of Cabernet Sauvignon. The business became known as Crabtree’s Watervale Cellars for a number of years. Robert built an enviable reputation for fine classic Watervale wines over the following 27 years and became a passionate advocate for the Clare Valley and South Australian wine industry. Robert sold his beloved property and winery in 2007 but remains a welcome friend and advisor to the new Crabtree Crew. Crabtree»
