The historic village of Keyneton and it's surrounds had been a home for up to seven wineries in the days of early settlement. Keyneton was a strong cultural focus for early pioneers, such as the Henschke Family Brass Band! This musical ensemble survived generations and featured wonderful wind instruments such as a B flat euphonium, cornet and E flat clarinet, which have all been restored and remain proudly within Henschke family hands. A complex cepage of Shiraz and Cabernet, Merlot and Cabernet Franc, grown to exceptional terroirs in Valleys Eden and Barossa.
Euphonium is a mostly Shiraz wine from vines over forty years of age, grown to sandy loams with patches of clay over gravel and bedrock soils, trained to Scott Henry and two wire vertical shoot positioning. Keyneton Vineyard was established by the legendary Cyril Henschke and is now a source of the Eden Valley's most stately red wines. The variations in site and trellis regimens provide many combinations to enhance the quality and character of wine. Biodynamic viticulture is a priority and mulching is used extensively. The finished Euphonium is matured eighteen months in a selection of new and seasoned French and American oak hogsheads prior to assemblage. Alcohol 14.5%
TASTING NOTES
Dark garnet red with violet hues. Intense aromas of blackberry, ripe mulberry and spiced satsuma plum with a hint of cassis. The palate is rich and complex with juicy ripe plum and red currant fruits while the savoury, fine, layered tannins provide a long and velvety finish. A delicious wine that can easily match exotic dishes such as seasoned rice noodles and Asian style broths. Cellaring potential is excellent, 2009 is classified as a great vintage which is drinking brilliantly and can be expected to evolve for another twenty years.
 Henschke
Henschke is one of the longest established family names in the Barossa
Johann Christian Henschke purchased land for a farm at Keyneton in 1861, after fleeing religious persecution in Silesia. He planted a small vineyard and an orchard, and after initially making wine for family consumption produced his first commercial vintage in 1868, believed to be principally riesling and shiraz. Each subsequent generation built upon the reputation for quality, but it was fourth-generation Cyril Alfred Henschke who in 1958 created the wine that has most captured the red wine world's imagination - Hill of Grace.
