A great vintage from a magnificent era, bottles labelled Bin numbers 71, 72 and 95.1966 Penfolds Grange claimed four significant gold medals and several prestigious accolades between 1969 and 1980. A cÃ©page of 88% Shiraz and 12% Cabernet Sauvignon, picked off the eminent Kalimna site and several other distinguished blocks of Barossa vine, the revered Magill Estate and Morphett Vale properties in Adelaide Hills. A fairly dry growing season followed by a warm vintage with near ideal conditions, matured eighteen months in all new American oak hogsheads.

TASTING NOTES

Deep brick red. Opulent, coffee gamey nose, chocolate characters and cedar notes. Sweet and rich palate offering ripe, gamey chocolate fruit flavours, truffles and earth over a generous length of chewy tannins, finishing long, filled with savoury fruit flavours, lasting and dry.

Penfolds was founded by a young English doctor who migrated to one of his country's most distant colonies a century and a half ago

Dr Christopher Rawson Penfold was born in 1811, the youngest of 11 children. He studied medicine at St Bartholomew's Hospital, London, graduating in 1838. Like many doctors before and since, Dr Penfold had a firm belief in the medicinal value of wine. Before he left Britain he had obtained vine cuttings from the south of France and these were planted around the site of the modest stone cottage he built with his wife, Mary, at Magill on the outskirts of Adelaide in 1845.
