A tribute to Johann Georg, the first Kalleske to migrate to Australia. Johann Georg was born in Brätz, Prussia in 1794 and emigrated aboard the Prince George to South Australia with his wife and children in 1838. The Kalleske family have been farming and growing grapes in the Barossa ever since. Kalleske Georg is a genuine, 100% Certified by Australian Organic, estate grown and vinified wine, vintaged and matured on the Kalleske wineworks at Greenock, a single vineyard Shiraz produced from the oldest vineyard on the farm. The Johann Georg vineyard site was planted in 1875 and produces very low yields of around one tonne per acre from a crop of old, gnarly, dry grown vines. The top soil is fortuitously sandy with excellent clay subsoil. Fruit is selectively hand harvested, grapes are gently destemmed into a small open top fermenter and vinified over the course of a week or more on skins, hand pumpovers are applied twice daily. After a time, the musts are basket pressed into a selection of new and prior use French oak hogsheads for the completion of ferments. Johann Georg is treated to two years maturation before bottling, completely unfiltered and unfined.
TASTING NOTESDark purple black colour. Powerful aromatics of bright red and black fruits, floral perfumes and briar, cedar, savoury spice, cured meats and sweet herb. The palate is full bodied and sophisticated, displaying purity of fruit and subtle barrel ferment characters. Stylish and elegant but with great intensity, the tannins are fine and integrated adding structure and poise. Silky, but solid, completed by an amazingly lengthy finish. |
