Bonfire Block was a dilapidated old vineyard site, destroyed by fire in the 1980s, she has been replanted to Semillon. Geoff Hardy's K1 Vineyard at Kuitpo is only a few miles away from McLaren Vale as the crow flies. The maritime surrounds of the Bonfire Block yield generously flavoured fruit, augmented by batches of finer, cool climate Semillon from the Adelaide Hills. Bonfire Block is always crafted to a styling which displays the vagaries of vintage and outstanding intensity of Semillon grapes grown to Pertaringa's superlative vineyards.
Bonfire Block Semillon is fashioned into a real red wine drinkers white. Each individual release is made from select parcels of the best estate grown fruit. In 1990, Pertaringa's Geoff Hardy and Ian Leask won the first ever South Australian Vineyard of the Year award, worthy recognition of their combined efforts. The Pertaringa vineyards can be lashed by drought and hot, punishing summers but a touch of rain helps to settle the dust and prevent vines from completely dehydrating. Yields are always minimal, smaller berries and fewer bunches increase depth of colour and flavour concentration, the finished wine is always a Semillon enthusiasts delight. Alcohol 11.5%
TASTING NOTES
Firm straw colour, attractive and bright. An immediate aroma of lightly fired oak wafts from the glass, upon closer inspection, a stronger note of lemon zest prevails. The palate is tight and structured yet has an attractive, creamy mouth feel due to time on lees. Fresh lemon and lime fruits create a persistant and refreshing length, neatly supported by gentle French oak.

About the Pertaringa Winery
The vineyards around the foothills behind McLaren Vale have always produced some of the regions finest wines, the enriched soils and sea breezes off St Vincent’s Gulf, set the scene for high quality wine grapes
In 1981 the Australian Wine Industry was in bad shape. Classic old vines, used to make fortified and red wines, were being removed. Big companies were pulling out of the industry. Twenty four year old Geoff Hardy had recently graduated from Roseworthy Agricultural College and had seen how the Californians were grafting old vines over to new varieties such as Chardonnay. Geoff formed a partnership with Ian Leask who already had a solid history in viticulture and was then managing the Ryecroft Vineyards. The vineyard was available for sale and this is how Pertaringa, an Aboriginal name meaning Belonging to the Hills, was born. Pertaringa»
