A hallmark label, a wine of impeccable character and credentials, regularly claiming a litany of trophies and medals at international wine shows. The Classic Brown Label, from the year that saw Wolf Blass claim International Winemaker of the Year at the London International, is a magnificent example of why Australia rapidly gained repute through Wolf Blass, for the production of world class Shiraz. Wolf Blass icon winemaker John Glaetzer's Classic Shiraz was regularly the most successful entrant in the Shiraz classes during this period.
100% Shiraz from the Barossa and Eden Valleys, Clare and McLaren Vale, handsomely crafted by Wolf Blass stalwart winemaker John Glaetzer. Harvested March to April, the fruit for this wine was sourced from some of the oldest, low yielding Shiraz vineyards in South Australia. The Eden, Clare and Barossa Valleys are renowned for the intense character of the Shiraz fruit sourced from their vineyards. Following pressing, fermentation commenced in stainless steel fermenting tanks before the wine was transferred to a combination of French and American oak hogsheads. The wine completed an extended maturation after eighteen months under the same oak. Alcohol 13.5% pH 3.43 Acidity 6.1g/L.
TASTING NOTES
The bouquet is intense, peppery and full of spiced fruit and chocolate like characters. Well balanced and exhibiting rich plummy characters, the palate has enormous richness and depth of flavour and finishes with fine wood tannins. Thoroughly scrumptious is this wine, it's fleshy and cherry-like, still sweet, yet refreshingly acidic, piecrust-like with savoury elements and reams of fruit mince, garnished with cedary vanillin seasoning and sweet peppery tar. Lengthy maturation in new American oak has resulted in a smooth, elegant wine of great depth and complexity. Suggested food? Even at this stage of maturity, Brown label is best suited to an aged and tender, well marbled sixteen ounce porterhouse.
