An exceptionally long-lived Grange, a beautifully focused wine, considered one of the best Granges ever produced. The most decorated of all Granges, winning 12 Trophies and 51 Gold medals over 13 years from 1962. A lighter Grange that spent only nine months in oak, the 1955 Grange was a favourite of Max Schubert's, partly because it was the vintage that vindicated him by winning a Gold medal in the open Claret class at the 1962 Sydney Wine Show. Bottles were labelled Bin numbers 13, 14, 53, 54 and 95.
The 1955 vintage is a blend of 90 per cent Shiraz and 10 per cent Cabernet Sauvignon grown at the Magill Estate and Morphett Vale in the Adelaide Hills, Kalimna Vineyards in the Barossa, with a further component from the McLaren Vale. Mild to warm growing conditions, a wet growing season with rainfall 60 percent above average. This was followed by a warm vintage with ideal conditions. Maturation for nine months in American oak hogsheads. Alcohol 12.60% Acidity 6.10g/L pH 3.57
TASTING NOTES
Winemaker comments by Max Schubert: Deep brick red. Mature cedar/ gamey/ coffee aromas with some earthy spice nuances. Lively and powerful, with plenty of sweet, prune/chocolate fruit layered with coffee-like richness, complex cedar/ leather characters and fine, dry tannins.

Penfolds was founded by a young English doctor who migrated to one of his country's most distant colonies a century and a half ago
Dr Christopher Rawson Penfold was born in 1811, the youngest of 11 children. He studied medicine at St Bartholomew's Hospital, London, graduating in 1838. Like many doctors before and since, Dr Penfold had a firm belief in the medicinal value of wine. Before he left Britain he had obtained vine cuttings from the south of France and these were planted around the site of the modest stone cottage he built with his wife, Mary, at Magill on the outskirts of Adelaide in 1845.
