St John's Road has been brought back to life by the places and personalities, the heritage and folklore of Barossa Valley. Every winter weekend, the red blooded players at St Johns Road take to the footy field for a true blue test of skill, strength and character. Blood & Courage is the quintessential Barossa Shiraz, it's all come about because of great comeraderie and kinship between the crew. A play of ripe, rich fruit, balanced oak integration and skillful winemaking, Blood & Courage captures the very essence of ardent and impassioned Barossa team work.
The team at St Johns Road aim to identify small parcels of exceptional Barossa Shiraz, worthy of the Blood & Courage moniker. Batches are vinified and aged separately right up to the final assembly, such that each component can be treated individually. Parcels of Shiraz from low yielding Kalleske and Schutz family vineyards in Ebenezer and Stonewell, are crushed into a ten tonne open top fermenter for several days of cool temperature vinification. Pumpover regimes and cap work is decided by taste, for optimal extraction of colour and flavours from the skins. Upon completion of malolactic, batches are pressed and filled to a selection of French oak hogsheads for a year's maturation.
TASTING NOTES
Vibrant, dark opaque ink, purple hues. Strong blackcurrant, dark plum and spicy mulberry fruit, a subtle overlay of dry roasted almonds, cocoa and oak. Full bodied, like Aussie rules, intense flavours of dark berry and plum mixed with Barossa earthiness. Red liquorice and dark chocolate, fresh and lively, rich in texture with subtle oak that shows soft, well integrated tannins. A convincing finish, packed with flavour that lingers long after the last sip!
