The warm, open Bagdad Valley in Tasmania's southern midlands, thirty kilometres north of Hobart, became famous during early settlement for its bountiful apple orchards, stone fruits and pears. There is very little water in the valley and the area is frequently punished by summer droughts. Many orchards have failed over the years and the open grasslands were turned over to sheep grazing. Neil acquired four hectares of the old Winstead Farm in Bagdad Valley during the 1980s, hand chosen as an ideal place for vines, dry grown, fertile and essentially frost free. The initial success of a small test patch of fifty plantings Pinot Noir was joined the following year by four thousand, ultimately a hectare and a half of Riesling and Pinot Noir.

The Murphy Family migrated to Australia from Ireland in 1909 and were one of the first settlers to establish vineyards at Merbein 15km west of Mildura
The Murphys eventually moved to Trentham Cliffs in 1960 and re-developed one of the local properties which was once part of a large sheep station. Jack and Moya Murphy established their farm, which included plantings such as citrus, vegetables and grapes for fortified wines, and then later re-planted to specialize in varietal grapes. The vines flourished in the rich red loam over limestone soils, nurtured by water from the Murray River. The first vintage was produced in 1984, using only 6 tonnes of grapes.
About the Tolpuddle Winery
Tolpuddle Vineyard was established in 1988, named for the Tolpuddle Martyrs: English convicts transported to Tasmania for forming an agricultural union
As the story goes, the leader of the Martyrs, George Loveless, served some of his sentence working on a property near Richmond, part of which is now Tolpuddle Vineyard. The vineyard is now planted with mature Chardonnay and Pinot Noir vines, facing northeast, sloping gently up from Back Tea Tree Road. The soil is light silica over sandstone and of moderate vigour, ensuring well-balanced vines producing grapes of great flavour and intensity. Martin Shaw and Michael Hill Smith MW acquired the property in 2011, fully committed to seeing Tolpuddle recognised as one of Australia's great single vineyards. In 2006 Tolpuddle Vineyard won the inaugural Tasmanian Vineyard of the Year award, reflecting the performance of this unique and distinguished site.

Stoney Rise was started in 2000 with an eye to produce wines that are food friendly, and offer people complex wines without too much oak, or overripe fruit characters. The name comes from a surf break in the Little Dip Conservation Park behind Robe in South Australia. After 10 years in the wine industry, as a sales rep, a wine buyer, and more recently working in wineries it was time for Holyman to make the break and do something on his own. Holyman spent time working in New Zealand, Portugal and France, as well as Tasmania, Mt Benson and Coonawarra, which has given him a broad understanding of wine styles, and how many different people make their wines.

In October of 1826, William Lyne, his wife and five children arrived in Van Diemen's Land (now known as Tasmania.) Among the first of settlers, the Lynes gave names to features of importance to them, such as Christmas Point, at which they arrived on Christmas Day, immediately prior to taking up their land grant. Always a sociable family, they celebrated with their fellow settlers as soon as their first dwelling, a sod hut, was complete. Early life in the area held its fair share of challenges, which the Lynes and other pioneering families rose to meet. Further setting the scene for the continuing fascination with the East Coast of Tasmania was the early artist and author Louisa Meredith, herself the first resident of Spring Vale. From 1875, the Spring Vale property has been in the hands of the Lyne family, who have pursued farming ventures in this beautiful area on the East Coast of Tasmania.

In 2002 Greg finally found the ideal site which consisted of approximately 14 hectares of grazing land on well-drained north east facing slopes, with cracking clay over a calciferous base. The site was also frost free. Robert Drew was contracted to establish the original vineyard for planting - which has now been planted with 2.9 hectares of Riesling and 3.8 hectares of Pinot Noir. In 2006 the demands of the expanding vineyard, and Robert Drew’s own very successful vineyard, necessitated the appointment of full-time viticulturist Paul Smart.

Pooley Wines were established 1985 when the late Denis and Margaret Pooley planted ten rows of Riesling and seven rows of Pinot Noir on their 16 hectare farm at Cooinda Vale in the Coal River Valley of southern Tasmania. Margaret Pooley remained the chief executive of Cooinda Vale Vineyard until well into her nineties. She was a hardy Scot and could be found tending vines during the coldest Tasmanian winters. The family’s love of wine was ignited many years ago after he and Margaret arrived in Tasmania from England, way back in 1954. Denis became a founding member of the Hobart Beefsteak and Burgundy Club, there were only six members and it was Hobart's most exclusive social club. Three generations of the Pooley family have since worked alongside each other in the estate vineyards, until matriarch Margaret's passing in 2010.

Poole’s Rock Vineyard was founded 1988 in the Broke Fordwich district of Hunter Valley by McQuarie banker David Clarke
Located thirty kilometres west of the main Hunter vineyard region, the original 32 hectare property is named after the monolith on its southern boundary, which in turn takes its name from a prominent local character who lived in the area over 100 years ago. Four prime hectares were planted solely to chardonnay vines, an endeavour described by legendary Australian winemaker, Murray Tyrrell, as the viticultural showpiece of Hunter Valley. David Clarke spent two years in search of this ideal site, one that would provide a suitable microclimate and alluvial soils conducive to the production of premium chardonnay. He engaged viticultural consultant Di Davidson to assist with the vineyard’s design. Development and planting commenced in spring 1988. They took meticulous care in establishing the vineyard, which is fully irrigated. The vines are now fully mature and producing remarkable quality fruit.

The Tamar Valley is situated in the north of Tasmania at a latitude of around 41-42° south. Approximately the same length as the Cote d'Or in Burgundy (90km) and with a similar cool, humid climate, vineyards occupy favoured N/NE facing sites predominantly along the west bank of the river. Chardonnay, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris and Gewurztraminer are all grown here, producing fresh, extremely elegant whites. But for red wines, Pinot Noir is king. From the bright cherry and raspberry scented wines from Kayena in the Lower Tamar, to the heady truffle and black cherry aromas from the Upper Tamar vineyards at Relbia and White Hills, the variety of styles from this small region prove that the French do not have a monopoly on terroir.

Dr Christopher Rawson Penfold was born in 1811, the youngest of 11 children. He studied medicine at St Bartholomew's Hospital, London, graduating in 1838. Like many doctors before and since, Dr Penfold had a firm belief in the medicinal value of wine. Before he left Britain he had obtained vine cuttings from the south of France and these were planted around the site of the modest stone cottage he built with his wife, Mary, at Magill on the outskirts of Adelaide in 1845. The couple called this house The Grange, after Mary's home in England.

The view here is fantastic, and being a comparatively warm site, it is dedicated to table wine production, the backbone for Ninth Island's Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc range. It is also the source of Pipers Brook Pinot Gris, Gewürztraminer and Tamar Estate (Cab/Merlot) wines. The two friends met in Adelaide in 1976 when the Australian wine industry was going through tough times. Peter was a 21 year old science student from Geelong, Victoria, who'd just got his first job in the wine sector as a cellar hand at Thomas Hardy & Sons inner city Mile End winery, where Tim was the production winemaker. They struck up a remarkable friendship that has spanned three decades, and seen them work alongside each other for 20 years at Hardys before moving on in more recent times to new jobs and ventures. They have a collective winemaking experience of more than 60 years and their interest in wine runs much deeper than at career level.

Clover Hill is one of Australia's principal Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier Cuvees
Founded by the Goelet family on the site of a former dairy farm in northeast Tasmania, Clover Hill was established in 1986 after an exhaustive search for an ideal site for the sole purpose of producing world class sparkling wine to rival that of the Champagne region. The site, with its rich soil, natural sloping amphitheatre and maritime climate, was deemed to be the perfect location to produce superb Methode Traditionnelle sparkling wine, rivaling the great Champagne Houses of France. The 66 hectare Pipers River property near Lebrina overlooks Bass Straight and capitalises on its natural assets. The rich land, which was a mosaic of undulating hills and golden clover, is now also lined with picturesque vines dotted with a smattering of golden clover.
About Clarence House Wines
Situated halfway between Hobart and Coal Valley, at the foothills of Meehan Ranges, the Clarence House landscapes were planted to vineyards in 1998
The first people to occupy the land were the local Moomairremener. European colonists farmed the Clarence district with cereal crops and established light grazing. The soils of Clarence Plains was particularly favourable, Reverend Robert Knopwood proclaiming in 1814 "a very delightful place, where they grew some of the finest wheat ever grown in Van Dieman's Land". The manors at Clarence House was built in the early 1830s by William Nichols, master builder and overseer of convicts. The house itself was built in two stages, whereas the adjoining stables began construction in 1826 and were not finished until 1928. Clarence House was sold at auction in 1844 following failed business ventures in windmills by William Nichol’s son. It eventually passed on to the Chipman family who remained farming the valley until Charles Chipman’s passing in 1955. Subsequent stewardship by the Tsamassiros family ended after a fire allegedly started by squatters in 1973. It was then restored by the Kline family, followed by the McGuigan and Newman families, until the property was acquired by the Kilpatricks in 1993.

The original consortium in 1973 planted 5 hectare of vines consisting mainly of Riesling and Cabernet Sauvignon, with some Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Gewurztraminer. In August 1990, the vineyard was purchased by Fred Peacock - one of Tasmania’s leading viticulturalists. Fred’s priority was to increase Pinot Noir plantings and introduce Sauvignon Blanc and Schonburger (the first commercial plantings in the Southern Hemisphere.) The Riesling vines are now over 30 years old, some of the oldest commercial vines in Tasmania. With Fred’s dedication and passion, the vineyard is now a 7.5 hectare showcase of premium Tasmanian varieties.

Brands Laira is today widely regarded as one of the region’s best plantings of Shiraz. With Shiraz being the only wine grape planted in Coonawarra from 1900 to 1950, the variety has played an important role in establishing Coonawarra’s international reputation as Australia’s pre-eminent red wine region.

Tasmania's potential for the production of classic, cool climate grape varieties was clearly evident. Their vision has come to fruition with the success of Bay of Fires, Tigress and Arras.

The first vines at Barringwood’s original Lower Barrington vineyard were planted on the site of a working sawmill in 1993. In 2012 Vanessa and Neville Bagot were visiting Vanessa’s beloved home state from their home in Sydney when they were made aware that Barringwood Park Vineyard (as it was then called) was for sale. A single visit to the stunning site along with wine tasting captivated them, perhaps it is too simplistic to say they liked the wine so much they bought the vineyard, but it’s not too far from the mark. While the purchase of the vineyard was really intended as a charming distraction from their busy professional lives in Sydney, the reality has been quite different. The distraction rapidly became an obsession, particularly for Vanessa who has truly found her passion. Indeed she is never happier than when she is hand pruning in the dead of winter.
