Excellent Langtons Classification. Keyneton Vineyard is named after English pioneer Joseph Keynes who settled atop the Mt Lofty ranges and established a village in 1842. Cyril Henschke purchased the property in 1966 and sowed the land to vines at a time when Riesling was the wine of choice and bonuses were being paid by the large wineries. He also had the foresight to plant Shiraz, the source of fruit for Keyneton Estate Euphonium, vines are now over forty years of age and yielding some of the Eden Valley's finest red wine.
Johann Christian Henschke planted a small vineyard and an orchard, releasing his first commercial vintage in 1868, believed to be principally riesling and shiraz. In the 1960s Cyril Henschke established a large planting in the Eden Valley which today is the source of Shiraz fruit which forms the backbone of Keyneton Euphonium. A mostly Shiraz wine with smaller components of Merlot, Cabernet and Cabernet Franc, grown to the Eden and Barossa Valleys is vinified at the Henschke Road wineworks at Keyneton into a soft, easy to enjoy wine. Components are treated to maturation in a combination of new and prior use French and American oak hogsheads for eighteen months.
TASTING NOTES
Deep crimson colour. A complex bouquet of cassis, blackberries and cedar with savoury nuances of tar and roasted meats. Hallmark plum, sage and blackberry Henschke characters. The sweet, rich and plush palate has a fleshy texture with layers of flavour, great depth, concentration and length, beautifully balanced by velvety, fine grained tannins. Will suitably accompany pink lamb with garlic, couscous and sage.
 Henschke
Henschke is one of the longest established family names in the Barossa
Johann Christian Henschke purchased land for a farm at Keyneton in 1861, after fleeing religious persecution in Silesia. He planted a small vineyard and an orchard, and after initially making wine for family consumption produced his first commercial vintage in 1868, believed to be principally riesling and shiraz. Each subsequent generation built upon the reputation for quality, but it was fourth-generation Cyril Alfred Henschke who in 1958 created the wine that has most captured the red wine world's imagination - Hill of Grace.
