Distinguished Langtons Classification. Michael is Wynns best of vintage Shiraz. The first Michael, labelled as Hermitage, was a special edition from the 1955 vintage, made after David Wynn noticed the outstanding quality of wine within two particular barrels, he ordered they be bottled separately. Michael vintage 1955 is an industry legend, good bottles of the original release still represent a memorable tasting experience. A regal Shiraz wine from nothing but the very finest Coonawarra vineyards, only made in years when fruit is of extraordinarily high quality. Wynns have been releasing Coonawarra flagships every year for a half century, wines of exceptional flavour, richness and longevity. During those special seasons where the grapes are of extraordinary quality, two flagship reds are also released, John Riddoch Cabernet and Michael Shiraz. Revived with the superlative 1990 vintage, Michael is only ever produced if the vintage has yielded fruit of peerless quality, the selection process includes only the top 1% of the most exclusive parcels of Coonawarra Shiraz. A decadent indulgment from an oustanding year, the finished Michael is matured fourteen months in a selection of seasoned and new French oak barrels.
TASTING NOTESBright, vibrant, intense purple hue. Dominated by concentrated red currants, cherries and raspberry aromas which mesh with black olive, mulberry and white spice. A complex nose with abundant and layered fruit. The palate combines a fine and elegant structure with generous fruit flavours. Red berries and dark brooding spice fill the mouth, supported by soft ripe tannins and balanced stylish oak. Michael shows us controlled red fruits, succulent acid and many complex layers, rich and full from start to finish, a seamless inky, dense palate, lingering effortlessly on a lasting, splendid finish. |
