The Kalleske family have been growing grapes and making Barossa Valley wine since 1853. One of the more distinguished members of the prestigious Grange Growers Club, the Kalleskes have also become one of Barossa Valley's most compelling and contemplative new labels. Greenock Shiraz is 100% biodynamic, as accredited by Australian Certified Organic, sourced from a single low yielding block, established to ancient cuttings, along the western edge of Greenock Creek in the northwest Barossa Valley. The Kalleske Greenock block consists of shallow, sandy loam soil over superb deep red clay and limestones, providing ideal conditions for Shiraz vines. Fruit is picked in separate batches over the course of a week off the auspicious Greenock block. Grapes are destemmed into open top fermenters. Each parcel is fermented separately at warm temperatures with hand pumpovers twice daily for a week or two. After pressing off skins, batches are filled to a high proportion of new French and American oak hogsheads for completion of primary ferments and natural malolactic. Following assemblage, Greenock is matured fourteen months, prior to bottling without any fining or filtration.
TASTING NOTESDeep purple black colour. Bright and lifted bouquet, blackberries and cherry, fruit cakes and ripe plum, mocha and oriental spice. Ripe black fruit flavours continue on the powerful, full-bodied, intensely pure palate, complimented by subtle oak barrel characters. Natural tannins are lightly chalky but fine, adding structure to support the strength of fruit. A sophisticated wine of great balance, completed by a solid lingering finish. |
