A wine of pure Barossa fruit by a master who loves Shiraz and is devoted to the valley he calls home. Grant Burge has been awarded every major trophy and medal in Australia, including the Montgomery, Stodart, Brisbane Club and Jimmy Watson. His vines are spoiled with attention, pruned, cropped and encouraged to achieve maximum development of varietal characters in the berries, the magic grail of good flavour, judicious acids and ripe tannins. The holy trinity of Grant Burge, Barossa and Shiraz. All Grant Burge reds are vinified at the Illaparra Winery, Burge is a loyal and dedicated Barossan, he proudly displays the Barossa name on every bottle as an assurance of regional integrity. Fruit is picked at complete ripeness from Burge's own estate vineyards and those of distinguished Barossa growers. Grapes are crushed and de-stemmed, inoculated and vinified in fermenters over the course of several days, pumped over thrice daily for optimal tannins and extraction. Free run and pressings are combined for added colour and structure, components are matured fourteen months in a combination of French and American oak hogsheads.
TASTING NOTESDark red in colour with vibrant purple hue. A rich, ripe style packing a big punch on the aroma, complex fusion of ripe raspberry and cherry fruit characters, vanillin oak, subtle milk chocolate sweetness, together with leather and cedar notes. The palate is luscious, full bodied fruit flavours fill the middle, with hints of licorice, plum and subtle vanilla cream. The wine finishes to fine, silky tannins and a lingering fruit driven finish. |
