A style of Whiskey which is unique to Ireland in general and to the Midleton Distillery of County Cork Cork, in particular. Crafted from a mash of malted and unmalted barley, to be triple distilled in traditional copper pot stills, Redbreast can be characterised by its full, complex flavours and wonderful, creamy mouthfeel. A strong contribution from distillates which have matured in Oloroso sherry casks give Redbreast its trademark Christmas cake character.
Redbreast is a reference robins, attributed to the Chairman of Gilbey's, who was an avid bird fancier. The first official reference to Redbreast appears in August 1912, when Gilbeys were selling Redbreast J.J. Liqueur Whiskey 12 Years Old, described as one of their famous brands. Ireland in the 1920s was a time of turmoil, money was tight but the the Irish clergy enjoyed a life of considerable status. Redbreast became known as the Priest's Bottle. By the turn of the 21st century only two Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey brands had survived, Redbreast & Green Spot. The growing global community of fine spirit enthusiasts have found renewed interest for this very Irish style of Whiskey.
