A pure single vineyard Pinot Gris grown to the most splendid aspects of Brancott Valley. This exceptional terroir, a combination of superb free draining soils and low annual rainfall with good sun exposure, create the optimum conditions for grapes which translate into some of New Zealand's finest wines. Fairhall Downs looks close to rivalling those exuberant Pinot Gris which are most famously produced in Alsace.
Marlborough's southern valleys are recognised for the unique character of their wines. The upper reaches of Brancott have their highest points in the south as they face the main Wairau Valley towards the north. It is here that Fairhall Downs Vineyard basks all day under the generous Marlborough sun. The property's wither silt loams over clay gravels form excellent free draining soils. Meticulous attention is paid to the vines, careful pruning, trimming and leaf plucking methods are applied to restrict yields while permitting maximum exposure to sunlight. Bunches of Pinot Gris are hand harvested and whole cluster pressed followed by vinification in a mix of tank fermenters and French oak barriques. Alcohol 14.0%
Bright and clear in appearance. Pear and citrus bouquet, fragrance of peaches and a hint of spice, lighter perfumes of lychees and orange blossom, pinenuts and vanilla. A well defined, concentrated Pinot Gris with great palate weight in a rich, dry style showing good texture and fresh natural acidity, flavours of nashi and custard pear before a long, lingering finish. Completely elegant, exhibiting strong varietal character.

About the Fairhall Downs Winery
Fairhall Downs is a family owned and operated Marlborough company, proudly specialising in premium, single vineyard wines
Ken and Jill Small abandoned the long, cold winters of a Southland sheep farm to pursue a vision of making good wine in sunny Marlborough. They realized their dream at a property along Wrekin Road close to the head of Marlborough's Brancott Valley near Blenheim. Ken and Jill started growing grapes under contract, planting vines on their first eight hectares of Fairhall River Valley land in 1982. In 1994, they formed a partnership with daughter Julie and her husband Stuart Smith who, like Ken, came from an agricultural background, farming with sheep and deer in Canterbury. Together, Ken and Stuart worked side by side at Fairhall Downs. Vineyard tips and techniques were passed on, hopes and ambitions shared and soon a winemaker was being hired. The first bottle of Fairhall Downs Sauvignon Blanc was produced in 1996. Fairhall Downs»
