Giovanni and Steve Maglieri bought forty hectares of McLaren Vale scrub in 1965 and set about the task of clearing it to plant vines. Gully Wines was established in 1972, later being renamed to Maglieri in 1977. Steve was obsessed with a vision to handcraft distinctive McLaren Vale wines. When award winning winemaker John Loxton joined Maglieri in 1981, the pair were able to establish their own style. Maglieri had the foresight to plant their Merlot vines to some of the best sites within McLaren Vale. Following harvest and vinification in a mix of fermenters, the finished Maglieri wine is matured in a combination of tight grained oak barrels, softening the gentle tannins and enhancing the supple Merlot fruit.
