Captain Cook's first step ashore anywhere in New Zealand was at Poverty Bay. Today it is the site of the world's easternmost vineyard, the first vines to see the sun each day. It remains a highly specialised white wine growing region and the Chardonnay capital of New Zealand. In the warmer and more humid climes of the North Island's east coast, the vines sprout plump berries of outstanding quality Chardonnay, encouraged by the drying breezes in a way that translates into the most vigorous, fruit driven Chardonnay wines.
The maritime winds around Nobilo's Poverty Bay vineyard serve to fully ripen grapes and concentrate flavours as the fruit achieves healthy levels of baume with excellent balance of sugars and acidity. Chardonnay is harvested and destemmed, crushed with little or no skin contact. Parcels are vinified at moderate temperatures to retain the bright varietal characters of Poverty Bay Chardonnay. Half the juices are fermented and matured in a selection of seasoned and new French barriques to add a subliminal hint of oak and enhance complexity. A component is treated to malolactic and remains on yeast lees until assemblage. The final wine is cold stabilised, fined and sterile filtered before bottling.
TASTING NOTES
Light straw, green hues. A bouquet of ripe stonefruit, pineapple and peach aromas are complemented by bread notes and fragrant vanilla spice. Rich and mouth filling, a medium bodied wine of excellent palate weight and balance, creamy and softly textured, layered with white peach and nectarine flavours, toasty, nutty complexities before a long, appealing finish.

About Nobilo Winery
Steeped in history, Nobilo wines are proudly acclaimed as some of New Zealand's most respected pioneering wine brands
The history of the company in New Zealand goes back to the early 1940's when the Nobilo family landed in New Zealand. They settled in Huapai, West Auckland, situated in the North Island of New Zealand, and started planting vines in 1943. The Nobilo family effectively persuaded and guided the New Zealand wine industry away from hybrid grape varieties and fortified wines, to a higher level of quality wine, now recognised and appraised by all markets.
