Icon is the culmination of years of research into specific viticultural techniques, with particular attention to vineyard sites and a winemaking strategy focused on fruit structure with balance. A Chardonnay of excellent weight and length, the natural fruit flavours fuse with the complexities of toasted bread, vanillin and warm, soft malo. Aged on full fermentation yeast lees and treated to a regular battonage. The choice accompaniment to the finest cuisine, serve close to room temperature to fully appreciate the complexity of the wine.
The Nobilo family effectively persuaded and guided the New Zealand wine industry away from hybrid grape varieties and fortified wines, to a higher level of quality, now recognised and appraised by all markets. Icon Chardonnay is grown to estate vineyards at Gisborne on the east coast of the North Island. The microclimate here enjoys typically hot dry summers and mild winters, producing fat full flavoured Chardonnays and early ripening varietals. Malolactic fermentation has softened and rounded the palate, whilst the snappy natural acidity provides crispness and balance. Maturation in oak barriques fuses toasted bread and vanillin qualities to the natural fruit flavours. Approx 13.5%
TASTING NOTES
Straw in colour, brilliant clarity. A powerful bouquet of ripe stone fruit with a hint of tangy citrus. Secondary aromas of baked bread, vanillin oak and warm, buttery malolactic influences, a wine of elegance and complexity. Soft, ripe nectarine and peach flavours meld with crisp, sweet grapefruit characters. The palate shows excellent weight and length, complexities derived from the luxuriant vinification techniques adding depth and power to the wine.
