From vines planted to one of the Hunter Valley's most splendid Terra rosa sites. The deep friable red loam soils over soft limestone yield generously flavoured grapes with unique flavour profiles. A full bodied Chardonnay in Burgundian styling, with staves of lovely oak and golden toasty autolysis. Scarborough never lets up, it knows what we want to smell and like to taste, it truly delivers. Hunter Valley Chardonnay at its best, superb alongside lobster and drawn butter, hollandaise, asparagus and garlic mayo.
The stunning thirty acre Gillards Road site at Pokolbin is one of the highest vineyards in Hunter Valley. Days are warm throughout the growing season and the elevation provides cool sea breezes at night. Gillards Road's Terra rossa soils are unique in the Hunter Valley, ideal for producing Scarborough's famous Burgundy influenced style of Chardonnay. The lucky vines are picked when fruit is at optimal ripeness and maturity, grapes are pressed and the juices are racked to fermenters. A third of the way through vinification, batches are filled to a selection of French oak barrels for completion of ferments, malolactic and a course of lees stirring battonage, followed by a racking to maturation tanks for a year.
TASTING NOTES
Straw green hues. A nose of roasted nuts and salted cashew, stonefruits and dusty integrated oak. More cashew flavours on the palate, white melon, buttery, honeyed fruit characters, balanced oak, butterscotch and nectarine. Beautifully structured with honeyed butter characters and integrated French oak. Full, round and rich, a strong lingering aftertaste with judicious acid, honey and green melon.
