The quality of Coonawarra Merlot had been catching the attention of Stonehaven for some time. Stepping Stone expresses the sensational regional influence and varietal definition of the tiny Terra rossa strip.
Stonehaven have won numerous awards by virtue of the quality of fruit and skill at winecraft, including International Winery of the Year at the prestigious San Francisco International. Sourced from Stonehaven's Father Woods vineyard at the northern end of the Coonawarra. The vines are nourished by favourable soils which provide excellent drainage, envigorated by a cool microclimate which treats the grapes to a slow ripening. Fruit is harvested to a schedule based around the development of good flavour profiles, refreshing acidity and fine tannins. The batches are vinified in a combination of open and static fermenters then pressed to French oak barriques for maturation.
TASTING NOTES
Cherry red in colour. Lifted aromas of blackcurrant, mint, chocolate and oak. A bouquet that is sweet with hints of cherry flan, gentle creamy oak and mellow spice. There are plum and cinnamon aromas, enhanced by lifted cedar and vanillin, the exemplary expressions meld onto a wonderful palate that's redolent with cinnamon and plum. Fine structure, drying tannins and a lingering finish.
