Yal Yal slopes gently down a hill and abuts twenty acres of indigenous bushland, largely impenetrable and full of native fauna. It is a spectacular location for viticulture, absolutely ideal for the engagingly bucolic Pinot Noir. All the vines at Yal Yal are treated with love, trimmed, pruned and kept healthy by hand. The aim is to keep yields small for optimal quality of fruit, to realize small amounts of the finest Pinot Noir. Yal Yal represents an edifying experience of countryside and grace, as it unravels layers of elegantly spiced cherry and blood plum flavours.
Working closely with renowned Mornington artisan Sandro Mosele, Liz and Simon Gillies launched the Yal Yal Road label in 2010. The vineyard is alive with the sounds of kookaburras and wallabies hopping between the vines at dusk. Parcels of Pinot Noir are selectively hand picked, grapes are destemmed but not crushed into fermenters for a week of cold soak maceration. A wild indigenous yeast vinification is treated to a course of gentle plunges twice daily for optimal extraction of colour, flavour and fine tannin. Batches are fermented to dryness and pressed, settled and racked to a selection of seasoned and new French oak barriques for natural malolactic and a year's maturation before assemblage.
TASTING NOTES
Deep ruby colour. The nose leaps out of the glass, immediately declaring itself as uplands Mornington Pinot Noir, so fully aromatic with raspberry and red currant notes, perfumes of quince and crushed meadow herb. The palate shows plenty of life, sassafras jube, black currant and morello flavours over a length of elegant, graphite tannins. A great match to rare duck breast, fine pate or succulent leg of lamb.

About the Yal Yal Winery
Yal Yal Estate is a picturesque, boutique estate vineyard, planted to some spectacular terroirs on Mornington Peninsula
Yal Yal vineyard is tucked away into the valley amongst the rolling hills of Merricks. Only a five minute drive to the beach, the property gently slopes down the hill and abuts twenty acres of untrammeled bush, which is largely impenetrable and full of native animals and bird life. The vineyard resounds with the sounds of kookaburra's calling and koala's seeking their mates. An old wallaby can often be found at dusk hopping between the vines. Working closely alongside renowned winemaker Sandro Mosele, Liz and Simon Gillies launched the Yal Yal Road label in 2010. Yal Yal»
