Made with hand picked grapes from sixty year old Grenache vines, this specially selected fortified wine was matured in small oak barriques at Pirramimma Estate. The 2002 vintage has produced an exceptionally fine wine, rich and full bodied, with underlying fresh fruit flavours. There are rich rancio characters and a smooth, immensely satisfyingly palate. A luscious desert wine exhibiting cherries and spices on the nose, complex mouth filling flavours and a long-lasting finish. The 100% Grenache content gives this fortified wine the correct weight of acid and fruit sugars, that can often be found lacking in brandied wines.
Winemaking at Pirramimma has been a family affair for well over 100 years and is now in the very capable hands of the winery founder's grandson. Pirramimma's dedication to traditional quality winemaking has seen the label's fortified wines appreciate in price and acclaim. A much over-looked genre of wine, the McLaren Vale Fortified is garnering increased attention abroad, as well as a growing cult following within Australia. Alcohol 18.5% Acid 5%3 g/L pH 3.29 R/Sugar 108 g/L Excellent drinking now and can be cellared carefully for 20 years plus.
TASTING NOTES
Meditterranean light treacle colour with highlights of sun and sunshine spun-gold! The nose is powerful, complicated but harmonious, a treasure trove. Intriguing viscosity in the glass, and an enrapturing figure as it swirls in the tumbler. A further nose of sweet old woods and tobacco, leathery apricots and lemon-butter middle palate. A fully flavored Grenache with a characteristic nose of sultana-tobacco and raisiny chocolate-truffle with a tropical citrus tang on the cheek and mid-palate. This one is a taster's fortified, it tells stories and releases anecdotes bit by bit. Rich and delicious without being sickly or over cloyish in any way, have it with food.

About the Pirramimma Winery
Pirramimma was founded by Alexander Campbell Johnston in 1892 and has been owned and operated by the Johnston family ever since
The Johnston family arrived in South Australia in 1839 and in 1892 Alexander, the tenth of thirteen children, purchased 97 hectares of rich farmland southeast of the then fledgling village of McLaren Vale. He named his land Pirramimma, an Aboriginal phrase meaning 'the moon and the stars' Pirramimma»
