Exclusively single vineyard Pinot Noir, drawing fruit from extremely low cropped, windswept vines, stimulated by chilly maritime breezes, not far from Phillip Island and Wilson's Promontary. Phillip Jones has been producing icon Australian Pinot Noir from the cool climes of Leongatha at Gippsland for over two decades. A biodynamic, fully organic viticulture is matched by old fashioned, highly artisanal standards of vinification. Much attention is paid to the handling of ferments and movement of the juices, retaining the refinement and textural integrity of the wine.
Established by Phillip Jones in 1979, the Bass Phillip property is located at Leongatha in the most southern part of Victoria, planted to closely spaced, north easterly facing vines, off an unirrigated four hectare site. All grapes are hand picked, minimal additives are employed, batches are innoculated with wild yeasts and boots are worn for a course of foot treading, to be vinified in an open fermenter with regular plunging to extract colour and flavour, followed by gravity fed transfer of the juices to avoid ripping the wine. An extended term on lees and up to eighteen months maturation in a combination of new and prior use lightly toasted French Alliers oak barriques, is followed by hand bottling without filtration.
TASTING NOTES
Deep red colour. Rich bouquets of raspberry, deep, ripe and concentrated aromas of cherry, earth and musk. Fragrant, complex and dark cherry fruit on the palate, a gorgeous mouthful of mint and blackberry, liquorice and currant, nutmeg and spice. A powerful finish closes to long and lingering, densely packed fruit, withering tannins.

More About Bass Phillip Winery
Bass Phillip is renowned for producing some of the best Pinot Noir wines in Australia for decades
Named after two of our great Australian explorers, George Bass and Arthur Phillip, Bass Phillip Wines were established by Phillip Jones in 1979. Recognised for decades throughout the world of wine as Australia’s finest Pinot Noir, the wines of Bass Phillip offer superb complexity, length of flavour, delicacy, power and cellaring potential. Made in a simple and traditional manner, with low cropped vineyards, no irrigation and minimal intervention in the winery, the wines of Bass Phillip display flavours which are characteristic of the region and their individual vineyards. The Bass Phillip Estate vineyard at Leongatha South became the first commercial vineyard in South Gippsland.
