The main aim in crafting Ninth Island is to maximise the natural cool climate flavours and aromas of Chardonnay without the use of any oak. An assemblage of vineyards from the Tamar and Pipers River/ Pipers Brook regions which yield harvests of slowly ripened Chardonnay, paradoxically a normally quick to ripen varietal. There is extreme flavour accumulation and plenty of natural acidity in the grapes at harvest, translating into a fresh, early drinking style of Chardonnay wine that captures the distinctive flavours and affability of all things Tasmanian.
Vines are planted to a mixture of Ferrosols volcanic terroirs at Pipers Brook and Vertosol black cracking clays in Tamar Valley. Both soils have excellent water holding capacity, offering a steady supply of moisture and nourishment throughout the growing season. Near perfect maritime conditions for flowering and fruit set are native to the Ninth Island vineyards. Favourable climes normally continue throughout veraison and ripening, leading well into vintage. Grapes are carefully crushed and destemmed using fully protective handling techniques to avoid any oxidation or browning. Juices are treated to a slow, cool fermentation for a style that's intensely aromatic, preserving the well integrated crisp acid finish.
TASTING NOTES
Bright, lemon yellow hues. Fragrant, lifted aromas of freshly cut white peach, floral apple blossom, lemon and lime peel, subtle hints of mineral quartz and talc. The palate is clean, fresh and vibrant with longer more streamlined acid to balance the harmony between richness and cleaning finish. Concentrated, complex and refreshing, before a lingering finish, on a length of seamless fresh crisp acid and tropical fruits.

More About Ninth Island Winery
The Ninth Island Vineyard blocks sit on the 41st parallel astride Tasmania's lavish Pipers Brook and Tamar River Valley regions
Ninth Island, which is part of the Kreglinger group of wineries, acquired the immensely successful D Block Vineyard in 1993. Being located on the banks of the Tamar River this site does not have the frost risk of Tasmanian other vineyards. The view here is fantastic, and being a comparatively warm site, it is dedicated to table wine production, the backbone for Ninth Island's Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc range. It is also the source of Pipers Brook Pinot Gris, Gewürztraminer and Tamar Estate (Cab/Merlot) wines. It is also the only site that is able to adequately ripen fruit if the vines are managed correctly to produce the Pipers Brook Tamar Estate Cab Merlot Ninth Island»
