The legacy of early Victorian vineyards is maintained through a curious canon of place names on Seppelt labels, Chalambar is a tribute to unemployed miners who turned to viticulture as the gold rush came to an end. Deriving its name from the picturesque mount near Great Western, Chalambar is a true regional icon that's been playing to packed houses since 1951. An immediately approachable Shiraz with the enigmatic capacity to age gracefully, flavours of spicy dark berry fruits and chocolate are supported by fine tannins and gentle cedary oak.
Chalambar is vinified from parcels of Shiraz grown to good vineyards in the Grampians ranges and Heathcote. Chalambar harnesses the individual strengths and distinct characteristics of old vines to create a wine of great charm and character that resonates with harmony. There's a great balance of violets, pepper and spice from the Grampians component that provides contrasting elegance to the strength of Bendigo's deeply ferrous fruit. Vines are assisted by crop thinning and encouraged to yield grapes with excellent concentration of flavour and gentle tannins. The finished wine is matured eighteen months in a combination of new and prior use French oak barriques.
TASTING NOTES
Deep, dark red. Intense and complex nose of dark berry aromas, sweet spice and dark chocolate nuances with underlying, integrated cedary oak. Dense, medium to full bodied with fleshy palate weight, flavours of spicy dark berry fruits and chocolate, supported by cedary oak. Juicy acidity is approachable on release, yet provides the requisite structure to go the distance.
