Marlborough based Spencer Hill have lead the new wave of New Zealand Chardonnay, claiming multi trophys at the International Chardonnay Challenge, Liquorland Top 1OO, London International and Air NZ Wine Awards. Latitude 41 is assembled from parcels grown to good vineyards in Marlborough and along Nelson River, a full bodied Chardonnay with layers of fruit and bold expression of terroir that speaks of it's origin. A course of ferments in highly vanilla spiced French oak and course of lees exposure, builds structure and adds superb mouthfeel.
A scrumptuous, limited release, artisanally crafted Chardonnay, fashioned from quality harvests of Mendoza and clone 15, grown to closely managed vineyards around Marlborough and River Nelson. Low yields and slow ripening contribute to intensified varietal characters in the fruit. The Spencer Hill viticultural team take great care to harvest different blocks at graduated stages of ripeness. Grapes are crushed, pressed and cold settled without any contact on skins, the clarified juices are vinified at a very cool 12C. After an extended rest on yeast lees and French oak fermentation, Latitude 41 completes full malolactic, followed by a term of several months maturation.
TASTING NOTES
Brilliant lemon yellow colour. Vanilla oak and tropical fruit with spicy overtones, tradewinds and mealyness. Mouth filling palate of tropical fruit, grapefruit and preserved lemon, guava and citrus beer, a richness and creamyness of texture from the treatment on sediments. A finish of great cleanliness and length, Latitude 41 is a very generous, giving wine, highly food oriented and a good match with rich seafood, game birds and white meat.
