100% Shiraz Barossa Valley, Eden Valley, Clare Valley, McLaren Vale, 1991 Brown Label represented the pinnacle of quality Shiraz produced by the Wolf Blass organisation. The fruit for this wine was sourced by the wine maker from some of the oldest, low yielding shiraz vineyards in South Australia. The fruit was crushed and then fermented to 3 Baume in stainless steel tanks, before transferring to a combination of French and American oak hogsheads to complete fermentation, and to enjoy extended wood maturation. After a completion of eighteen months in barrel, the cuvee was finalised after trials by chief winemaker John Glaetzer. Alcohol 13.5% pH 3.43 Acidity 6.1 g/L Sugar 1.3 g/L.
TASTING NOTES
Rich deep crimson in the glass. The bouquet is full of spice and chocolate like characters. There are aromas of rich berry, complexed by hints of pepper, spice and currant. The palate has enormous richness and depth of flavour, there's elements of blackberry, aniseed, mint and robust earthy flavours, the warm and dry conditions of the vintage developing the Shiraz into characters that are dominant and black fruited. A supple milk chocolateyness, entwined ying and yang-like with richness of the fruit, all wrapped up within a comforting cashmere shawl of developed but pronounced tannins. The oak treatment is cannily suited to the regionality of the wine, well-integrated and moving towards a long, seamless finish.
