Hoddles Creek was planned and developed from day one, with a view to crafting an artful range of superlative Yarra Valley wines. The most arduous aspects were planted, because they offered the best promise of outstanding quality fruit. Chilly mornings, vivid afternoon sun and extended ripening, profound vintages of intensely ripened berries. Enter an exquisitely proportioned Chardonnay which captures the attention with its broad bouquet and evocative perfumes, a match to coquille st jacques, seared pesto chicken or tuna steaks under dill, champignon and creme fraiche.
To preserve the vivid fruit flavours and beautiful balance of upper Yarra Valley Chardonnay, grapes are hand picked throughout the cool morning hours, immediately destemmed and lightly crushed into a press. Juices are chilled, settled and given time for skin contact to draw some phenolic, inoculated through a combination of wild and cultured yeasts to add layers of complexity and enhance vineyard expression. Batches are filled to a mix of oak barrels and fermenters for several days vinification at 18C to 21C. Components are treated to fortnightly battonage on lees for up to a year before assembling into the final wine, cold stabilized and fined before bottling.
TASTING NOTES
Straw yellow hues. Big bouquet of citrus and lemon curd, grapefruits, stonefruits and a whisp of toasty apple flan. Lemons and brûlée to the palate, an effusive style of crisp stone fruit flavours, ripe orchard harvests, minerality and gently spiced French oak before a lingering, fruit filled finish, elegant and pleasingly dry.

About the Hoddles Creek Winery
New ventures in the Yarra Valley make their mark -James Halliday
Hoddles Creek Estate was established in 1997 when the D'Anna family decided to establish a vineyard on the property that has been in the family since 1960. The vineyard sits astride Gembrook road and adjacent Hoddles Creek. It's steeply sloping blocks prohibit mechanical harvesting, with both vineyards being hand pruned and harvested. Hoddles Creek Estate is planted with 10ha of pinot noir (five clones), 6 ha of chardonnay, 1ha each of sauvignon blanc, merlot and cabernet sauvignon, and 1.5ha of pinot gris. Hoddles Creek»
