Christopher Rawson Penfold planted vines on the slopes of Magill in 1844, with a view to producing fortified wine for curative purposes. Grandfather Rare Tawny is an assemblage of old stocks, mainly Mourvedre and Shiraz, Cabernet and Grenache, sourced from vineyards which are specifically managed for fortified wine. Every year, components of the highest peerage are assembled and added to the Grandfather Solera. Grandfather is aged at least twenty years before being drawn off for bottling. During the extended maturation, Grandfather Rare Tawny develops concentration and complexity, achieving extraordinary palate weight, structure and sublime sweetness.
